A ranking policeman who jumped to the aid of a colleague that was assaulted by a knife attacker was granted the Monarch's Honor for Courage.

Sergeant Tim Ansell grappled with 27-year-old Jacob Brown subsequent to he placed a knife to the throat of his colleague Sergeant Marc Foster.

Brown initiated the assault as the officers and their partner, Police Constable Marcus Wolstencroft, were talking to a driver after a road collision in Whalley Range in mid-2023.

Brown attacked with blade the two Sergeant Ansell and Sgt Foster before Police Constable Wolstencroft stunned him with a stun gun.

"Officer knifed," the officer could be heard saying over his radio.

Bodyworn and dashcam footage shared by the police department showed Brown, wearing in black with a hood up, approach to Sergeant Foster from behind with a weapon extended.

He struck the officer who tripped and dropped to the street, before Sgt Ansell jumped in and attempted to subdue him to the floor despite being repeatedly struck with the weapon.

Police Constable Wolstencroft drew his Taser and waited for a open target, concluding the struggle to an finish.

Sgt Ansell can be heard to say: "Please provide assistance on my neck now, I'm bleeding in the neck."

Sergeant Ansell suffered multiple deep cuts to his throat and more wounds to his limbs and torso, while Sergeant Foster received cut injuries.

Authorities stated Sgt Foster employed his hands to stop his partner's blood loss prior to paramedics came.

The new award arrives after the law enforcement team received internal Courage Honors in late 2023 and the police federation award from the regional officer association in April 2024.

They further earned a Area Valor Recognition in summer 2024.

"The efforts of the entire team eventually saved themselves and resulted in no bystanders endured any injuries."

Brown received a sentence to an psychiatric detention in early 2024, according to authorities.
