This thanksgiving celebration is celebrated by the Oromo people, Ethiopia's largest ethnic group, and takes place at the completion of the land's main monsoon period. Each year, festival-goers assemble around sacred rivers and lakes to express gratitude to their creators for the lush vegetation that the rains have brought. "I have participated in this celebration for the last nine years," mentioned 25-year-old Moata Abdulmajid. "For me, the celebration represents my identity, it showcases the pride and significance of my people." Men, ladies, the elderly and the younger generation all join in, adorned in striking garments and accessories. They chant, move rhythmically, share stories and place recently harvested green plants and blossoms in the water - symbolizing vitality, rebirth and optimism. Global Participation The celebration does not only attract people from across Ethiopia, visitors come from globally. "I visited last year - it was so good, so magnificent, I invited my children with me now," expressed Claire, from Belfast in Northern Ireland. "It is amazing. Everyone greets you, all attendees shows warmth and offers greetings." Celebration Schedule The first day of the event took place on the weekend in the main city. On the next day, celebrants made their way to a provincial location, a small town near the urban center. While this celebration has its roots in indigenous faith systems, it is now observed by the majority of the Oromo people, irrespective of their religion. Contemporary Developments In the last ten years, the number of participants participating in the festival has grown significantly. This is partially because of the expansion of digital platforms, where various young people record their clothing, dance moves and musical expressions during the celebration. Historical Context In the earlier times, the festival was used as a platform for anti-government protests - the Oromo community have historically expressed concerns about social exclusion. Nevertheless, this year's celebration proceeded harmoniously, with an emphasis on joy, solidarity and heritage appreciation.
